At first glance, Lamar Peterson’s landscapes appear idyllic, but they are populated by scenes of disordered fantasy. In Untitled, a group of women in princess-sleeved leotards and Tinkerbelle-style shoes pose around a man as if they have just completed performing a big dance number. However, things take a dark turn as some of their faces melt together, in a scene more nightmare than fairytale. Peterson’s image becomes a cautionary story and imposes a critical gaze on childhood imagery.
