Employed as the sole staff photographer for the Village Voice for over twenty years, the photojournalist Fred McDarrah played a crucial role in the documentation of New York’s avant-garde scene between the 1950s and 1970s. Contributing to the legacy and preservation of numerous artists, writers, and musicians, McDarrah photographed individuals such as Muhammad Ali, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Alice Neel, Faith Ringgold, and Andy Warhol. Here he has photographed the painter Bob Thompson, comfortably seated in his studio and surrounded by several large-scale works that incorporate a range of biomorphic shapes.
