The Studio Museum is looking for volunteers on Saturday, September 29, 2018 to assist in maintenance of Maren Hassinger: Monuments, an exhibition of eight site-specific sculptures installed for approximately one year in Marcus Garvey Park. The sculptures in Monuments are made of branches, wood chips, and natural materials that respond to aspects of the park's landscape.

Volunteers have played an essential role in the creation of these large-scale works and their continued participation is an important component to this project, which celebrates community. Prior art-making, gardening, or fabrication experience is helpful but not necessary! The volunteer shift will be followed by a pizza lunch with the exhibiting artist Maren Hassinger.

Responsibilities:

Weave and secure branches into the wire grid that forms the armature of each sculpture

Gather additional sticks and materials with instruction from Museum staff as needed

Assist with moving materials between sites

Support Museum staff with set up and tear down

Additional support as needed

Expectations:

Volunteers will be required to sign a consent form, anyone under 18 must have their form signed by a parent/guardian before their shift.

Arrive promptly at the start time for a short orientation session and stay for duration of shift

Follow instructions and behave professionally

Wear appropriate clothing; pants and comfortable closed-toe shoes are required. Long sleeves are encouraged to prevent scratches.

Volunteers should feel comfortable using scissors and clippers as some manipulation of the branches may be required

Be able to lift at least 20 pounds and withstand several hours on their feet.

Click here to register to volunteer. Please email hgirma@studiomuseum.org with any questions.

Join us afterwards for The Artist's Voice: Maren Hassinger with Lowery Stokes Sims at 2:00 pm at the NYPL Harlem Library!
